Reid Memorial Church, Blackford,Edinburgh

A majestic looking church pointing to heaven.

Edinburgh allotments

Seen from Blackford Hill.

Edinburgh sunrise

And a freezing one at that!

A very cold pre-dawn over Edinburgh. The two chimneys are Cockenzie Power Station - seen in a very early post.

No. 10, Edinburgh

A knotty carving surrouding No. 10. The hanging basket is neat.

Edinburgh skyline

A favourite view! Not many cities have such a dramatic skyline with a great set of crags (Salisbury Crags) in the background. Not to mention another hill (Blackford Hill) just minutes from work for the photographer to climb to get this great view!

Clouds over the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh

Another quick lunchtime jaunt with the camera.

Skirling Kirk, Scottish Borders

Skirling Kirk with a dramatic winter sky. Unlike yesterday when the sun peeked out for 30 seconds... just long enough to get the photo of the sun drenched(!) Traquair House there was no sign at all of the sun.

Near West Linton, Scottish Borders

Atmosperic weather continues!

Auchencorth Moss, Midlothian

Stopping off on the local moor just before dusk. Cold, wet and windy no glorious sunset but dynamic clouds!

Near Peebles, Scottish Borders

Wild weather!

Traquair House, Innerleithen, Scottish Borders

A whotsit on an excellent slate roof.

Traquair House Gardens, Innerleithen, Scottish Borders

Winter woodland walk. Very ancient Yew trees.

Traquair House, Innerleithen, Scottish Borders

The low building on the left contains a chapel with a brew house underneath at the back. It was a dismal day and the the sun was out only for about 30 seconds! Fortunately I was in the right place at the right time and I rushed around getting a few different pics. Mind I had to wait some time and the car got stuck in the mud wheels spinning - had to be pushed out! A great effort to get you a couple of pics today! As least we have deep winter to look forward to!

Traquair House, Innerleithen, Scottish Borders

This time of year we have a lot of weather! This afternoon Traquair House stood magnificently in the sun with storm clouds behind. Traquair House is the oldest continually inhabited house in Scotland it dates back to 1107 - yes, that makes it its 900 anniversary!

As the sun sets

Just managed to catch this on the way home from work today.

Rooftop view - Edinburgh

Everything is in this picture - Edinburgh's stone built heritage and columnar basalt cliffs in the background - just like the Giant's Causeway!

Edinburgh - patterns

Much of Edinburgh is built of stone and slate.

Arthur's Seat and Edinburgh

Still frosty at lunchtime!

Arthur's Seat and Edinburgh at dawn

Very subtle light.

Edinburgh sunrise

You may be wondering why no posts during the last two days... well it has been very dreich - RAIN all the time! This morning was different - it was a VERY cold sunrise!

Ornate gateposts, Edinburgh

Just walking round at lunchtime...

Auchencorth Moss in the rain

Why does the weather always look better in a photograph that it actually was on the moor?

Sunday, 18 November 2007

Tree in the wilderness

A last gasp small hint of pinkness in the sky before the sun set on an otherwise dreich and very short day. At least we got a few of the lichens that thrive on every fence post top on the moor when the weather is like this!

Lichen on fence post, Auchencorth Moss

OK, definitely the last lichen today!

Lichen, Auchencorth Moss

OK... just one more!

Lichens, Auchencorth Moss

It was difficult to pass each fence post!

Life on a gatepost, Auchencorth Moss

Even on the dreariest of days there are masterpieces of nature to be captured. A gatepost on Auchencorth Moss.

Lichens on the moor

Overcast and wet it may be - but our lichens thrive and come to life in these conditions!

Today proved to be wet and overcast. Let the imagination see the rolling Pentland Hills behind the tree!

Beech skyline

This can be a great place to see buzzards. I've seen up to eight slowly wheeling around over the trees, today nil but with imagination you can see them!

Early morning in Edinburgh

Dawn light through the trees.

Dawn over Edinburgh

A view to the left.

Dawn over Edinburgh

Been away for a few days and returned to what could be a good dawn.

Stolen shot

To brighten up the days pics on what was a grey day, I crept up to this Christmas cactus and stole a shot before the owner found me!

Pot plants

I wanted to rearrange the plants and move the hose reel... but decided better not!

Timepiece in detail

Precise carving gives a precise time... oops, I'm late!

Going for a walk at lunchtime its great to have the occasional wall mounted clock to check the time.

Sunrise on the way to work, Penicuik, Midlothian

Not usually up early enough to capture such fiery skies... I wonder whether it is like this EVERY morning?!

Pre-dawn excursion

It was good to stop on the way to work and get this very dreamy sky.

End of another day, Mendick Hill near West Linton

What better way to finish the day than with a great Scottish sunset!

Late in the day at West Linton

Thirteen minutes past four and it is getting dark. Days are not very long up here!

Walston Cemetery, Lanarkshire

What a superb sky!

Central Scotland scenery

Just north of Biggar, not quite like the Highlands but only a few minutes from home.

Old landslide near Dunsyre, Lanarkshire

The low angle of the sun picks out an old landslide. Can you see the gap at the top where the rockfall started?

Green leaves on the way home

A rarity this time of year. A welcome break from pictures of sandstone

Vines in Penicuik?

Hand carved vines on top of a pillar.
